Game of
Progressive Words
Any Number of Persons may Play. It is Particularly Suitable for Entertaining a Large Company.
1st. When played as a progressive game, by twelve or more persons.
Provide a table for every four persons, and distribute these small cards equally among the tables.
Players are seated at the tables, those opposite each other being partners. Turn all the cards face down. Each player at the table draws a card from the center and turns the letter up, the player having the letter nearest the head of the alphabet plays first. The hostess then mentions the name of a class of objects upon which the players are to guess, such as birds, fish, wild animals, fruits, things found in a grocery, flowers articles of wearing apparel, rivers, etc. Supposing the hostess has named “birds” as the class of objects to be guessed, a player at each table draws from the center a card and turns it face up, showing the letter “R.” The object is to see which player will be the first to mention a name of a bird commencing with that letter. For example, the letter “R” has been drawn from the center, the name “robin” is mentioned by one of the players, who then takes the card. If “S” is drawn, “swallow” or “snipe” may be mentioned. In like manner each player turns a card in his turn and the player guessing the word taking the card until the time allotted is finished, when partners having the most cards together move to the next higher table. A new class of objects is then named by the hostess, and the game proceeds as before. It is best to have a new class of objects named every time the players advance. If desired prizes may be awarded to the persons having won the most games.2nd. When played by less than twelve persons.
When fewer persons play the game, it is not played as a progressive game. In that case you can play partners or each person for himself. The method of play is same as described above. Any number of persons may be seated at the table. At the end of a certain time, or when the cards are played out, the couple or person who holds the most cards wins the game.
