"SPOOF
FOR TWO PLAYERS.
This new and interesting came is played on a board with twelve counters, being quite plain on one side, and be[arin]g a star on the other, these are named the men; and two round holders, 4 in. long, with flattened ends, called "the spoofs." The twelve men are equally divided between the two players, each also taking a "spoof," one player to be represented on the board by the men with the star uppermost, the other player taking the remaining six men and placing them on the board with the plain side upwards. Each player arranges his men on the board, the stars forming a row, one man on each of the six squares, at one end of the board, and the plain men on the six squares at the opposite end. The player who is represented by the stars, takes the first shot, and taking his "spoof" between his fore-finger and thumb of either hand, and pressing the flattened end on the edge of the man which he intends to move first, he will find the same will shoot forward into the open space in front of the squares (the distance of the shot being regulated by the

amount of pressure put on the "spoof.") His opponent (plain) then shoots off one of his men in the same manner, the object being to cover, or partly cover his opponent's man, that is in the open space, if he succeeds in doing this, the one covered is then reversed and becomes a star and is removed to one of his own squares. (The squares will hold four men each.) His [ow]n man takes the position of the one captured, and is agai[n] directed against the enemy: should he be unsuccessful, h[is] opponent then takes another shot, either with the one alrea[d]y in play or from the squares, and if successful follows his [s]hot with any of his men, and endeavours to make another [c]apture. The player who first loses all his men loses the game.
THE SQUARES can only be attacked when there are no men of the same side out in the open space. If a man attacks a square, or stops on any lines of the squares, when there are any of his opponents out in the open space, the man is lost to the player and is reversed and becomes an opponent. In taking a shot from the squares, the man must go quite out of the squares; if he stops on any of the lines he must be put back into the square, and the player must lose his turn. Should a man be knocked quite out of his square instead of being covered, the player shooting the man loses same, and he is reversed and becomes an opponent. When a man has been placed in a square he can only be moved by the "spoof." More than one man may be covered at one shot—when this is done, both are then to be reversed.
{Note: Side 4 of rules sheet.]
NEUTRAL GROUND.—The square in the centre of the hoard is considered neutral ground, and any man alighting on or touching the same, from any cause whatsoever, is out of play, and must remain on the neutral ground; if done by shooting, the player also loses his turn. Should a man that has been shot miss its mark and go off the board, the same is considered out of play, and placed on neutral ground.
The players to move alternately, except when a succcessful shot has been made—then the player continues the shots from any of his men until he misses covering a counter. Either player covering or partly covering a man a loses his turn, and returns into his own square; or if he partly covers one of his own and opponent's at the the same time, the same penalty is incurred.
The game comes with round wooden sticks with beveled ends, which are used to propel winks.
The winks are all white, and each is marked with an "X" on each side.
The bifold game board has a black bumpy surface, with the title "SPOOF" in gold at a diagonal between two sets of double lines on one side of the back. The inside of the game board has 4 gray square corners and 6 plain squares between each of the corners. In addition, a larger gray square appears in the middle of the board. No writing appears on the board.
